Hurricane Helene: Old Fort Office

One month.

That’s how long we had in our new office before Helene hit. It was our dream space. Multiple counseling rooms. A cozy waiting room with nice furniture, resource racks for information on other local services. Enough space for group therapy and support groups. Next door to Old Fort Elementary School with a dedicated children’s therapy room for their students. A kitchen and food pantry in partnership with Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry.

Now it’s gone.

You can see the water line in many of these images: 16” of flood water in most places. The front yard looks like a different planet. We are hard at work trying to ensure our ability to continue serving the community of Old Fort, while grieving the loss of this space. PLEASE DONATE TODAY TO HELP US REBUILD. We KNOW our mental health services will be CRUCIAL to the recovery of our communities.

If you would like to talk to one of our counselors, they are ready to listen. Text or call +1 (828) 388-7433 and leave a message and a licensed, WNC local mental health professional will get back to you as soon as possible. Please include your preferred method of communication, as we know service and wifi are still hard to come by. If email is easier for you, you can email us at helenesupport@blackmountaincounseling.org. Our counselors deeply love the communities we serve - Old Fort, Black Mountain, Swannanoa, Asheville, and more - and are ready to help their neighbors today and as long as needed.
